About the Project

The design of the space evokes southwestern themes to tie this DC office to the University of Arizona campus and natural features of Arizona itself. River rock boarders, bold color, large format stone tile walls, and custom millwork ceilings combine to set this space apart. The Box Canyon Corridor combines angled lacquered panels, light fixtures, and digital displays. Combining these elements required precise coordination between millwork shop drawings, light fixture factory drawings, and sequenced installation to complete the feature.

The angled lacquered panels proved to be quite challenging as traditional millwork and 3D modeling techniques were needed to ensure a seamless installation. Each panel juts out into the space or recesses into the wall in its own plane making for a challenging geometric problem. This was overcome by modeling the entire hallway and producing shop drawings based upon the modeled angles and calculations.

The challenges did not end there. The custom millwork ceiling needed to appear solid while also allowing for accessibility to service mechanical and plumbing equipment. A unique timber beam grid and tile system was created to achieve these requirements. The ceiling is constructed of panels which sit on beams. Hidden in the beams is a chamfered rail to guide the panels back into their spot after they are removed to allow service.

While most of the materials were sourced from within the 500 mile radius in accordance with green practices, one particular material could not come from anywhere but Arizona itself. The café area features a 12 foot live-edge table with turquoise inlay. This turquoise was sourced from the Kingman Turquoise Mine, one of the last commercial mines producing this iconic mineral in Arizona.

In all, the project provided ample opportunities to overcome challenges while producing a truly unique space to experience.
