Sustainability Starts with Smarter Decisions
Sustainability in construction is about more than meeting certification requirements. It’s about making thoughtful decisions at ever stage of a project, from the materials we select to the resources we preserve, and the expertise we bring to the jobsite.
This month, we’re highlighting how DFS Construction is advancing sustainability through professional development, projects pursuing LEED certification, and a commitment to reducing waste through adaptive reuse

Investing in Sustainability Expertise
Congratulations to Neemias Cruz, Senior Superintendent, on earning his LEED certification!
Professional development helps strengthen our team’s knowledge and understanding of sustainable building practices. As sustainability continues to shape the commercial real estate industry, building that expertise allows us to better support clients and project partners in achieving their goals

Project Spotlight: OSSE
DFS is currently working on the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) project in Washington, DC, with a focus on achieving LEED v4 certification for Commercial Interiors.
The project’s sustainability checklist addresses several key areas, including energy performance, water efficiency, responsible material selection, construction and demolition waste management, and indoor environmental quality. Strategies include planning for construction waste diversion, using low-emitting materials, and incorporating energy and water efficiency measures.
These efforts reflect a coordinated approach to sustainability, bringing together project partners to consider how design and construction decisions can contribute to a healthier, more resource-efficient workplace.

Sustainability in Action: Medallia
At Medallia’s 31,000+ square foot East Coast headquarters in McLean, VA,, sustainability began with a simple question: What can we preserve rather than replace?
Working with the architect, DFS helped transform an existing office into a modern, technology-focused workplace while retaining and repurposing functional elements of the original space.
The team reused existing workstation desks, preserved the concrete floor, and removed, reorganized, and reinstalled fabric ceiling baffles. Existing pantry locations, a classroom, a boardroom, and several private offices were also retained and updated.
By prioritizing reuse over unnecessary replacement, the project reduced material waste while delivering a refereshed workplace designed around employee experience, flexibililty, and collaboration.
The Medallia project demonstrates an important pricinple: meaningful sustainability efforts don’t always come with a plaque. Sometimes, the greatest impact comes from making the most of what is already there.
Building with Purpose
At DFS, we believe responsible construction means looking beyond the finished space to consider the decisions that shape it. Whether supporting certification goals, investing in our team’s expertise, or finding new life for existing materials, we’re committed to building thoughtfully and delivering lasting value.
If you’re planning your next project and want to build sustainably, we can help.
